About the NHFC (National Housing Finance Corporation):

The National Housing Finance Corporation (NHFC) is a Development Finance Institution (DFI) established in 1996 by the South African government. The NHFC’s primary goal is to provide housing finance to low-income and middle-income households while addressing socio-economic challenges within the country.

The NHFC Bursary Fund was created to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in gaining the skills and expertise needed to work in the housing finance sector.

About the NHFC Bursary Program:

The NHFC is offering bursary funding for the 2025-2026 academic year. Bursaries are available for undergraduate (from the second year) and postgraduate study levels in various fields related to housing finance and development. These fields include:

  • Built Environment
  • Construction Economics
  • Developmental Studies
  • Economic Development
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Finance
  • Housing
  • Housing Construction
  • Human Settlements
  • Property Markets
  • Real Estate
  • Risk Management

Bursary Coverage, Renewability, and Selection Process:

The bursary covers tuition fees, prescribed books, and other study materials, with additional expenses like student accommodation and other costs considered at the discretion of the NHFC. Bursary recipients can renew their awards each year based on maintaining satisfactory academic performance.

Eligibility Requirements for the NHFC Bursary:

To be eligible for the bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • South African citizenship
  • Completion of Matric
  • Pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in one of the specified fields
  • Completion of the first year of study and entering the second or higher year
  • Studying at a recognized and accredited South African tertiary institution
  • Strong academic record
  • Financially disadvantaged background

How to Apply for the NHFC Bursary:

  1. Download and complete the NHFC Bursary Application Form 2025-2026.
  2. Submit clear copies of the required supporting documents along with your completed application form. Failure to include these documents may result in disqualification.

Required documents include:

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate (certified copy)
  • Full tertiary academic record, including recent transcripts on university letterhead (certified copy)
  • Proof of university admission (for first-year students)
  • ID documents of parents or guardians (certified copies)
  • Proof of household income for parents or guardians (latest payslips if employed or affidavit if unemployed)
  • ID documents or birth certificates of other individuals residing within your household (certified copies)

Closing Date for the NHFC Bursary:

The application deadline is 31 January 2025-2026. Late applications will not be considered.
