ABOUT RATLOU LOCAL MUNICIPALITY
Ratlou Local Municipality is a local municipality located in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, situated in the North West province of South Africa. This Category B municipality is primarily rural and consists of approximately 26 villages and commercial farms. Previously known as Setla-Kgobi Local Municipality, Ratlou Local Municipality shares its borders with three other municipalities and the Republic of Botswana.
The municipalities within Ratlou Local Municipality include Disaneng, Kraaipan, Madibogo, and Setlagole. The main economic sectors in the area are agriculture, mining, and tourism.
RATLOU LOCAL MUNICIPALITY BURSARY PROGRAMME
Ratlou Local Municipality offers a Mayoral bursary programme for students residing within the Ratlou Municipal area. The bursaries are available for the 2025-2026 academic year and cover various fields of study on a part-time or full-time basis. The aim of the bursary program is to provide exceptional students with the opportunity to further their studies, enhancing their chances of employment or entrepreneurship.

BURSARY COVERAGE AND OBLIGATIONS
The bursary provided by Ratlou Local Municipality covers various expenses, including registration fees, tuition fees, study materials, and learner support. Additionally, it offers partial coverage for residence fees. The bursary amount is determined on a case-by-case basis and is awarded once per year.
The bursary is initially awarded for one academic year, which consists of two semesters. It may be renewed based on the student’s academic performance and the availability of funds.
Upon graduation, bursary recipients are required to serve the council or municipality for a duration equal to the funding they received. During this period, bursars will be remunerated at a market-related rate.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for the Ratlou Local Municipality Bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Reside within the Ratlou Local Municipality area in the North West Province.
- Have completed Matric.
- Be studying or intending to study a qualification in one of the specified fields in 2025-2026
- Be pursuing a 3-year tertiary qualification on a full-time or part-time basis.
- Study at a tertiary institution registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) or a higher education institution within South Africa.
- Possess a strong academic record.
- Be from an indigent family with a total household monthly income not exceeding R3,500 per month.
- Not be receiving any other conditional bursary funding throughout the bursary term unless approved by the municipality.
HOW TO APPLY
To apply for the Ratlou Local Municipality Bursary, follow these steps:
- Download and complete the Ratlou Municipality Bursary Application Form for 2025-2026.
- Ensure that you carefully read and understand all the terms and conditions listed on the application form before applying.
- Submit clear copies of the required supporting documentation along with your completed bursary application form. Failure to include any of these documents may result in disqualification:
- Recent passport-sized photograph (to be attached to the first page of the application form).
- Certified copy of your ID document.
- Matric certificate, NTC3, or equivalent examination (certified copy).
- Most recent examination results or academic record if currently studying at the tertiary level (certified copy).
- Proof of acceptance or provisional admission at a tertiary institution on the institution’s letterhead.
- Certified copies of your parents or guardians’ ID documents.
- Proof of income for your parents or guardians (latest payslips if employed, affidavit if unemployed, latest financial statements if self-employed, certified death certificates if deceased, SASSA letter if receiving a grant, court letter stating child support amount if parents are divorced, affidavit from a parent stating child support amount received if parents are separated).
- Proof of residence (letter from the tribal authority, confirmation letter from the municipality, or a title deed).
- Testimonial from your school, employer, or a person of authority.
- Any additional information or documents that support your application (optional).

CLOSING DATE
The closing date for applications for the Ratlou Local Municipality Bursary is 28 February. Ensure that you submit your application before this date, as late submissions will not be accepted.
