ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – SAAFoST

The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation is an organization that promotes food science and technology in South Africa’s food and allied industries. SAAFoST encourages scientific research, hosts workshops and seminars, and supports educational activities to increase the knowledge base in the field. SAAFoST is a non-profit organization run by volunteers and has approximately 2,000 members across Southern Africa.

The SAAFoST Foundation, established by SAAFoST, is responsible for administering academic bursaries, awards, and prizes.

ABOUT THE SAAFoST BRIAN KOEPPEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – FIELDS COVERED

The SAAFoST Foundation is offering the Brian Koeppen Memorial Scholarship for the academic year. This scholarship is named in honor of the late Professor B.H. Koeppen, former Head of the Department of Food Science at Stellenbosch University.

The scholarship is available for postgraduate (Master’s and Doctorate) degree studies in the fields of Food Science and Food Technology. It is open to students at various institutions including the University of Stellenbosch, University of Pretoria, University of Venda, University of the Free State, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Durban University of Technology, Tshwane University of Technology, and University of Johannesburg.

ABOUT THE SAAFoST BRIAN KOEPPEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – COVERAGE VALUE

The scholarship will be awarded to two postgraduate students, one for a Master’s degree and one for a Doctorate degree. Each scholarship is valued at R35,000 per annum, intended for tuition fees. If a recipient already receives other bursaries or awards covering tuition fees, the scholarship may be used for academic conferences, study materials, study visits, and approved research.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SAAFoST BRIAN KOEPPEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must meet the following minimum entry criteria to be eligible for the scholarship:

  • South African citizenship or permanent residency
  • Membership of SAAFoST for at least one year before applying for the scholarship
  • Registration at one of the specified institutions for at least one year before nomination for the scholarship

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SAAFoST BRIAN KOEPPEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Applications for the scholarship can only be submitted by the relevant tertiary institutions, and students cannot apply directly. Department Heads can nominate up to one candidate who is registered for the qualifying qualification at the specified institutions.

To apply, contact your Department Head and request a nomination for the scholarship. The nomination forms are available on the SAAFoST website. Submit the completed nomination form along with supporting documentation, including proof of SAAFoST membership, ID document or proof of permanent residence, proof of registration, academic record, project proposal, progress report, and proof of other bursaries or financial support.
