ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – SANBI
The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is an organization established in 2004 under the South African Department of Environment, Forestry, and Fisheries. Its main objective is to conduct research and disseminate information related to biodiversity while contributing to the management of biodiversity resources in the country. SANBI is also involved in ecosystem rehabilitation and restoration and manages the National Botanical and Zoological gardens to enhance biodiversity for educational and entertainment purposes.
ABOUT THE SANBI BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
SANBI is offering a bursary programme for the academic years April to April 2025. The bursary is available for MSc studies and is aimed at postgraduate students who have a strong interest in conservation and are enthusiastic about their studies. The bursary is specifically for students undertaking a research project to generate information required for the making of non-detriment findings by the Scientific Authority for certain CITES-listed plant species, including Aloe peglerae, Euphorbia flanaganii, Euphorbia groenewaldii, Euphorbia obesa, Euphorbia stellata, and Stangeria eriopus.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SANBI BURSARY
To be eligible for the SANBI bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- South African citizen or non-citizen
- Intending to pursue an MSc qualification and undertake a research project on one of the specified plant species
- Registered or intending to register at a recognized university in South Africa by 31 March
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SANBI BURSARY
To apply for the SANBI bursary, follow these steps:
- Download and complete the SANBI Bursary Cover Sheet .
- Enter “https://uni24.co.za/” in the field asking how you heard about the SANBI bursary.
- Compile the required supporting documents, including a certified copy of your ID document or passport (if not a South African resident), a letter of interest explaining why you should be awarded the bursary, a full Curriculum Vitae, two letters of reference (one from an academic supervisor), academic records, and the highest qualification.
- Submit your application via email to students@sanbi.org.za and students.sanbi@gmail.com with the subject line “Scientific Authority MSc bursary (priority plant project).”
CLOSING DATE FOR THE SANBI BURSARY
The closing date for applications is 22 March at 09:00. It is important to submit your application before this date to be considered.
