Sasol Mainstream Programme
Sasol Mainstream bursaries is a performance-based programme with a work-back / pay-back obligation.
This is an all-inclusive bursary offered to talented individuals who are planning to study full-time towards an undergraduate / postgraduate degree, to pursue selected Engineering, Science and Technology qualification for applicants nationally.
To be considered, you must be a South African citizen, currently registered or qualifying for possible registration at an approved South-African University or University of Technology for the following year.
Applications may be submitted for degrees (no diplomas) in one of the following fields of study:

To support economic growth demands in South Africa and to satisfy our own requirements for highly skilled postgraduate in the science and engineering disciplines. Sasol, in general, awards postgraduate bursaries for M.Sc., M.Eng. and PhD. studies in Engineering.

Sasol Foundation Programme
The Sasol Foundation is offering all-inclusive bursaries to talented individuals who are planning to study full-time towards an undergraduate degree or diploma to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for applicants nationally. To be considered, you must be a South African citizen and have acceptance or provisional acceptance for studies at a South African public University or University of Technology for the following year.
The Sasol Foundation is also offering STEM and Non-STEM bursaries exclusively for qualifying children of Sasol employees, Sasol Khanyisa/Inzalo shareholders as well as applicants from Sasol fence-line communities.
Sasol Foundation reserves the right to select qualifying individuals based on academic performance, household income, acceptance to University/University of Technology as well South African citizenship.
Please note that applicants who are in Grade 12 this year, must submit the Grade 11 final results. All other applicants may submit end of year results whichever year they have completed Grade 12. Applicants who were enrolled at a Higher Learning Institution may use their end of year results to apply.
How do I qualify?
To be considered for the Sasol Mainstream Undergraduate bursary, the applicant must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Must be a South African Citizen
- Registered or qualifying for possible registration at an approved South-African University or University of Technology for the following year
- Bursary offered to talented individuals who are planning to study full-time towards an undergraduate / postgraduate degree, to pursue selected Engineering, Science and Technology qualification for applicants nationally.
Application Criteria (Undergraduates)
Undergraduate and University of Technology needs
Minimum requirements: Grade 12 (Current Grade 12 students will apply with Grade 11 results)
Bursaries can be accessed by those in matric or those who have completed matric but have not started with their first year of the studies.
B.Eng. and B.Sc.
- Level 6: 70 -79% for Mathematics and
- Level 6: 70 -79% for Physical Science and
- Level 5: 60 – 69% for English First Additional language or
- Level 5: 60 – 69% for English home language or
- Level 4: 50 – 59% for English Second Additional language
B.Eng. Tech Engineering (Mine Surveying)
- Level 5: 60 – 69% for Mathematics and
- Level 5: 60 – 69% for Physical Science and
- Level 5: 60 – 69% for English First Additional language or
- Level 5: 60 – 69% for English home language or
- Level 4: 50 – 59% for English Second Additional language
General application criteria for students currently studying at university:
- Current 1st year students will apply with Grade 12 results.
- Current 2nd year students applying for third year will apply with 1st year results.
- Current 3rd year students applying for 4th year / Hons, will apply with 2nd year results.
- Hons. students applying for Masters, will apply with 3rd year results.
- Master students applying for PhD, will apply with Hons. results.
- Undergraduate students and Hons students must get 50% and above to meet minimum criteria.
Application criteria for current university undergraduate students
(Academic year 1, 2, 3, 4 and Hons)
- A Minimum of 50% must be obtained for all courses which the student has registered for in the previous academic year.
- If a student is already studying towards the degree course for which he/she is applying for a bursary, the student must be registered for the degree course over the minimum study period for the degree involved (i.e. 4 years for engineering degree) and/or able to still complete studies in that minimum period of time.
- Students who are already on an extended study period or already added a year to the minimum study period (i.e. 5 years for an engineering degree) as well as individuals who are planning to register for an extended degree course, must not apply.
- Applications must be for full time studies towards an academic degree at an accredited and approved South African University.
- Studies at the University of South Africa (UNISA) will not be considered/allowed.
- No bursaries are awarded for studies at a University of Technology, except for studies in Mine Surveying.
Current university postgraduate students – (applying for Masters / PhD)
- A Minimum of 65% must be obtained for all courses which the student has registered for in the previous academic year.
To be considered for the Sasol Foundation bursary, the applicant must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Be a South African Citizen.
- Must have acceptance or provisional acceptance for studies at a South African University or University of Technology for the upcoming year.
- Combined Household Income must be less than 600 000 per annum
- Must have obtained a minimum of 50% in all subjects.
- Non-STEM bursaries are reserved only for qualifying Children of Sasol Employees, Khanyisa/Inzalo Shareholders or Candidates from Sasol Fence-line communities.
NB:
- The final selection will prioritise financially needy and academically competitive candidates.
- Selected individuals must be willing to go through and Interviews as well as psychometric assessments.
- Please note that applicants who are in Grade 12 this year, must submit the Grade 11 final results.
- All other applicants may submit end of year results whichever year they have completed Grade 12.

Sasol Mainstream Undergraduate Bursaries:
- 100% of the prescribed University tuition fees, registration fees and exam fees.
- An amount equal to the average rate for accommodation in a single room at a University residence at which the Sasol bursar is studying. This rate is determined by Sasol in conjunction with the university.
- An amount for meals based on three meals per day, as determined by the University.
- An amount of approximately R12 000,00 per annum, towards book and pocket money.
Sasol Mainstream Postgraduate Bursaries:
- Monthly stipend for the duration of your studies to pay for registration fees, tuition, research cost, accommodation and all other expenses related to their studies.
- No additional cost/expenses will be covered by Sasol.
- The mentioned stipend is pre-determined and will be paid from the date that proof of registration for the degree involved can be submitted.
- Access to Sasol technical mentors for support during studies.
- Once finished with their studies, Sasol postgraduates have the opportunity to join the Sasol Graduate Development programme as a Scientist-in-Training or Engineer-in-Training. (Sasol approved rules/regulations and the clauses of the bursary contract will be applicable.)
Sasol Foundation Bursaries:

- An amount equal to the average rate for accommodation in a standard single room at a university residence, at the university at which the Sasol bursar is studying. This rate is determined by Sasol Foundation in conjunction with the university.
- An amount for meals based on three meals per day, as determined by the university.
- An amount for book and pocket money
Please note:
- Prescribed tuition fees, registration fees and exam fees are paid directly to the university.
- Fees for accommodation are paid directly to the university if the student is staying in university-administered accommodation Students will be required to pay for any repeat subjects.
- In cases where the student elects to stay in non-university administered accommodation, monies in lieu of accommodation and meals will be paid directly to the individual. In such instances, the amounts will be limited to that prescribed in points 2 and 3 above.
- Book and pocket money will be paid directly to the individual.
- Payments in respect of the above are made twice a year. The first payment is made at the beginning of the first semester, and the second payment is made at the beginning of the second semester.
- Full details of the payment process and the requirements which must be met are communicated to successful applicants once a bursary has been awarded.

- Accept Disclaimer to proceed by clicking on the white button turning it blue
- You can exit the page once you receive a response on your application (which will also be emailed to you)

Selection Process
How does the selection process work?
Applications by e-mail and/or not submitted via the Sasol bursaries website will not be considered as well as incomplete or late applications.

Applicants, who do not have internet access or access to an internet café in their area, may contact our Sasol Bursary Application Helpline at 086 010 6235 for support.
All applicants will undergo screening based on the following criteria:
- South African citizenship
- Acceptance/ conditional acceptance to university/ University of technology
- Academic performance of the applicants
Selected candidates will further be invited for online interviews and psychometric testing.
The final outcome of the selection events will be communicated to applicants by the end of November.
Successful candidates will be provided with comprehensive documentation relating to the Bursary Programme, as well as a written contract and other documentation for completion.
Bursaries are awarded for commencement in the upcoming academic year and no payments are made in respect of studies already completed.
