About SAAFoST
The South African Association of Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST), founded in 1960 and located in Cape Town, is a non-profit organization with 2000 members and 250 Institution and Custodian members, including major food companies in South Africa. SAAFoST’s mission is to advance knowledge in the field of food science and technology through activities such as publishing scientific papers, encouraging research, conducting seminars and workshops, and supporting educational initiatives.
About Brian Koeppen Memorial Scholarship
The Brian Koeppen Memorial Scholarship is offered by the SAAFoST Foundation in honor of Professor B H Koeppen, the former head of the Department of Food Science at Stellenbosch University. This scholarship includes two programs: one for a Master’s degree and another for a doctorate degree. Students can pursue their studies at specified and approved tertiary institutes under this bursary program.
Scholarship Coverage
Recipients of the Brian Koeppen Memorial scholarship are awarded R 35,000. If students are already receiving another bursary, this scholarship will cover the costs of study materials, academic seminars, research, study visits, etc.
Scholarship Eligibility Criteria
Applicants interested in this bursary program must meet the following eligibility criteria set by SAAFoST:
- Be a member of SAAFoST for at least one year prior to applying for the bursary.
- Be a citizen of South Africa or a permanent resident.
- Be nominated for the bursary by the Department of Food Science at one of the approved institutions: University of Pretoria, University of Venda, University of Stellenbosch, University of Free State.
- Alternatively, be nominated by the Department of Food Technology at the following institutions: Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Johannesburg, Durban University of Technology, Tshwane University of Technology.
- Be registered for the relevant postgraduate program at least one year before the nomination.
- Nominations should be based on academic performance in previous degree results.
- Nominations must be supported by progress results approved by the research work supervisor.
- Nominations, recommendations, and reports should be submitted before the closing date.
How to Apply
Applicants interested in the bursary should download and complete the Brian Koeppen Memorial Scholarship Application Form. Along with the form, they should submit the required documents as specified by SAAFoST:
- Proof of SAAFoST membership
- Proof of registration
- Copy of nominee’s complete academic records
- South African ID document or proof of residence
- Proof of other financial aid if applicable
- Approved report of research work conducted in the previous year

Selection Process
An authorized committee for the Master’s and doctorate degree selection process evaluates applications based on academic excellence and research work from the previous year.

The application deadline is April 18.
