The Compensation Fund is inviting unemployed COID beneficiaries with a permanent disablement (PWD) as a result of occupational injuries/ diseases, dependants of COID beneficiaries with a permanent disablement and dependants of fatally injured employees to apply for the Compensation Fund External Bursary opportunity.

The applicants must have been accepted at a recognised Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College, Community Education and Training (CET) College or Higher Education Institution (HEl).

If you do not receive any response from the Compensation Fund within two months after submitting your application, consider your application (as likely) unsuccessful.

THE BURSARY COVERS: • Tuition fees, Prescribed Study Material, Monthly Stipend and Accommodation. • The award is renewable every year – for the duration of the study programme enrolled – depending on the availability of funds and academic performance.

The bursary is open throughout 2024 financial year; however applicants are encouraged to send their 2024 academic year applications on/before 31 March 2024.

Fields Covered: The Compensation Fund External Bursary Scheme covers a wide range of fields of study. The eligible fields include, but are not limited to:

  • Accounting Science/BCom (Honours) in Accounting/CTA
  • Actuarial Science and Financial Mathematics/Actuarial Science/Mathematical Science/Statistics/Data Science
  • Aeronautical Engineering/Aerospace Control/Aviation
  • Agriculture
  • Analytical Chemistry/Biochemistry/Biotechnology/Microbiology
  • Architecture/Town Planning/Construction Management/Quantity Surveyor
  • BSc in Computer Science and Informatics/Information Technology (with specializations such as artificial intelligence/machine learning/data science & analytics/data engineering/Cybersecurity/Cloud Computing/Internet of Things (IoT)/Quantum Computing/Robotics/Software Engineering/Computer Networks)
  • Design Graphic (Communication) Design/Digital Marketing/Brand Communication or Management/Digital design/Film and Production/Animation
  • Economic Science/Econometrics
  • Engineering (Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Metallurgy, Aeronautical)
  • Food and Beverage technician/Hospitality/Food & Beverage/Culinary
  • Health Professional and related clinical science
  • Investment Management
  • Marine/Maritime Studies
  • Operations Management/Industrial Engineering/Production Management/Supply Chain Management
  • Quality control and planning/Quality Assurance and regulatory/Environmental Health
  • Risk Management and Forensic Science
  • Teaching (Mathematics, Science, Information Communications Technology, and Early Childhood Development)
  • Apprenticeship full programme (for capable candidates who exited the mainstream schooling system at Grade 9, have General Education Certificate (GEC), and have the potential to excel in this programme)

Coverage Value, Renewability & Selection:

The Compensation Fund bursary covers tuition fees, prescribed study materials, accommodation, and a monthly stipend. Bursaries are awarded for one academic year at a time and are renewable for the entire duration of the qualification, subject to satisfactory academic performance and the availability of funds.

Eligibility Requirements: The eligibility requirements differ for Group 1 and Group 2 applicants.

Group 1:

  • South African citizenship
  • Currently unemployed
  • Acquired a permanent disability due to occupational injuries or diseases
  • Intend to study in one of the listed fields (full-time if not disabled, part-time if disabled)
  • Accepted or preliminary accepted to study at a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College, Community Education and Training (CET), or Higher Education Institution (HEI)
  • Intend to improve skills for reintegration into the workforce or self-employment

Group 2:

  • South African citizenship
  • Aged between 17 and 25 years old
  • Dependent of a COID pensioner or COID beneficiary who is permanently disabled due to occupational injuries or diseases
  • Intend to study in one of the listed fields (full-time if not disabled, part-time if disabled)
  • Accepted or preliminary accepted to study at a Public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College or Higher Education Institution (HEI)

To apply for the Compensation Fund bursary, download and complete the Compensation Fund Bursary Application Form for . In the application form, indicate that you heard about the bursary through Uni24.co.za. Submit the completed application form along with the required supporting documents either by email, hand delivery, or post/courier. The details for submission can be found on the application form.

Closing Date:

The closing date for the Compensation Fund Bursary is 31 March. It is important to submit your application before this date to ensure it is considered.
