About De Beers:

De Beers is a historic company with a rich legacy dating back to 1888 when it was founded by Cecil Rhodes, Alfred Beit, and N M Rothschild & Sons bank in London. Although officially established in 1888, the company’s history can be traced back to 1866 when the Eureka Diamond was discovered. Today, De Beers is a global leader in diamonds and is involved in various aspects of the diamond pipeline, including mining, exploration, sorting, trading, retail, and industrial diamond manufacturing. The company operates in 35 countries and employs over 20,000 people globally. De Beers is jointly owned by Anglo American (85%) and the Republic of Botswana Government (15%).

The company’s mining activities take place in South Africa, Namibia, Canada, and Botswana, and De Beers is responsible for selling approximately 35% of the world’s rough diamonds.

About the De Beers Bursary Program:

De Beers is offering bursaries for the 2024-2025 academic year to students from Blouberg and Musina Municipalities in Limpopo Province. These bursaries will support studies at universities or universities of technology in fields such as Accounting, Electrical Engineering, Human Resources Management, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Mineral Resource Management (including Geology, Geotech, and Survey), and Mining. A total of seven bursaries will be awarded, with one bursary allocated to each field, except for Mining, where two bursaries will be awarded.

Coverage and Renewal:

The De Beers bursary covers all study-related expenses, including tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, and accommodation. Bursary recipients will also have the opportunity to participate in paid vacation work during university holidays. The bursary is awarded for one academic year at a time and is renewable annually based on satisfactory academic performance.

Eligibility Requirements:

To qualify for the De Beers Bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum entry criteria:

  • Be from the Blouberg or Musina Municipality in Limpopo province.
  • Have completed Matric.
  • Achieved a minimum APS score of 5 for Mathematics in Matric.
  • Achieved a minimum APS score of 5 for Science in Matric.
  • Be enrolled in a full-time qualification in one of the specified fields.
  • Have completed the first year of study and be entering the second year.
  • Be registered at a recognized and accredited South African university or university of technology.
  • Not be in receipt of any other bursary funding from another company.
  • Preference will be given to Historically Disadvantaged South African (HDSA) students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

How to Apply:

To apply for the De Beers Bursary, applicants should submit the following supporting documents:

  • Certified copy of Matric certificate.
  • Full academic record, including the most recent academic results/transcripts on the institution’s letterhead.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Proof of place of birth or proof of residence in Blouberg or Musina Municipality.
  • Formal letter from the Blouberg Municipality or Musina Municipality or Tribal Council confirming local area residence (on original letterhead, dated within the last three months).

There is no application form to complete. Applicants should send these documents via email to dve.TSrecruitment@debeersgroup.com or deliver them to the Human Resources Office in Timbila or drop them off in designated community drop-off boxes.
