ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – UMGENI WATER
Umgeni Water is a state-owned enterprise established in 1974, responsible for providing bulk water and related services to the residents of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. As the largest supplier of bulk potable water in the region, Umgeni Water services an area of more than 21,000 square kilometers, making it the second-largest Water Board in South Africa. The company operates under the Department of Water and Sanitation and has its headquarters in Pietermaritzburg, with additional offices in Ulwandle and Izintaba.
Umgeni Water’s assets include dams, water treatment works, small water treatment works, borehole schemes, pipelines, and tunnels, enabling the reliable supply of water to the region.
ABOUT THE UMGENI WATER BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
Umgeni Water is offering postgraduate bursaries for the academic year. The bursaries are available for Master’s and PhD degree studies focusing on research in various fields related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (5IR). These fields include 21st-century water infrastructure systems and management, advanced materials, advanced sensor platforms, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, blockchain, data science, drones and autonomous vehicles, internet of things (IoT), new computing technologies, real-time, interoperable water data, and remote sensing (satellite imagery).
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE UMGENI WATER BURSARY
To be eligible for the Umgeni Water bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Have completed a 4-year degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Science.
- Be interested in studying towards a Master’s or PhD degree focusing on one of the research areas mentioned above.

Applicants must submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with their application email: ID document (certified copy), full academic record (certified copy), degree certificate (certified copy), and a motivational letter.
Please note that there is no application form to complete for this bursary. Applicants are only required to submit the listed documents.
