About The Upstream Training Trust:

The Upstream Training Trust (UTT) offers bursaries to students currently in matric or university students pursuing studies in Geosciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, IS, and IT. Preference is given to female students and students from previously disadvantaged areas. Applicants for the bursary should be passionate about the upstream oil and gas industry and have plans to enter this industry in the future.

The eligible fields of study related to the oil, petroleum, and gas industries include:

  • Chemistry
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Geophysics
  • Geoscience
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Information Systems
  • Mechatronics
  • Mining Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Physical Science

Each full-time student can receive a maximum amount of R90,000 per year, which covers expenses such as registration fees, tuition, books, accommodation, meals, and field excursions. Accommodation, meals, and field excursions are considered secondary expenses and are covered after primary expenses.

Additionally, the Upstream Training Trust provides monetary incentives for academic excellence, with varying amounts awarded based on academic performance:

  • Students achieving between 65 and 69% receive R5,000.
  • Students achieving between 70 and 74% receive R10,000.
  • Students achieving 75% or more receive R15,000.

The Upstream Training Trust was established in 1997 by Petroleum Agency SA and companies involved in the exploration and production of oil and gas in South Africa. “Upstream” refers to the phase of the petroleum industry that includes exploration, development, and production before refining.

The objective of the Upstream Training Trust, which operates under the umbrella of the Petroleum Agency SA, is to provide training and development opportunities for South Africans in the oil and gas industry. As a non-profit organization, the Upstream Training Trust focuses on developing specialist human skills for South Africa’s upstream petroleum industry. It emphasizes three key disciplines: Technology, Engineering, and Natural Science.

Eligibility Criteria for The Upstream Training Trust Bursary:

Applicants for the Upstream Training Trust bursary must meet specific eligibility criteria. Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in the rejection of the application. The eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • Must be a South African citizen.
  • Must be applying for studies in the fields specified in the advert only.
  • The bursary is targeted at youth applicants who are pursuing an academic qualification.
  • Must be registered at a university for a qualification.
  • Must be previously disadvantaged with demonstrated potential and a minimum pass mark of 50%.
  • Should not be receiving any other bursaries.
