About Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine (SBPM)

Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine (Pty) Ltd (SBPM), previously known as RPM Union Section, is a prominent Platinum Producing Mine located in Swartklip, Limpopo, South Africa. With over 40 years of production history, the mine was acquired from Anglo American Platinum by Siyanda Resources and the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela Joint Venture. In addition to platinum, SBPM also produces by-products like palladium, rhodium, gold, and chrome.

SBPM Bursary Programme 2023

SBPM is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme for the 2025-2026 academic year. The bursary aims to support undergraduate studies in the following fields:

  • Information Technology
  • Management Accounting
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Mine Survey
  • Mining Engineering
  • Rock Engineering

Bursary Coverage and Responsibilities

The SBPM bursary will cover registration fees, tuition fees, prescribed learning materials and equipment, textbooks, accommodation, and a monthly allowance. Bursary recipients will also gain practical experience through vacation work at SBPM.

Recipients are expected to maintain high academic performance, complete assigned projects on time, and engage proactively in on-the-job development.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens.
  • Have completed Matric or be currently in Matric.
  • Be studying or intend to study full-time towards an undergraduate degree in one of the specified fields (1st, 2nd, or 3rd year).
  • Be studying or accepted at a recognized and accredited university in South Africa.
  • Have an excellent academic record with a minimum overall average of 60% in Matric or current university year.
  • Be in financial need.
  • Preference will be given to students residing near the Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine or from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted online for the specific field of study:

  • SBPM Bursary Application for each relevant field (with the specified Reference Number).

Applicants need to register an account on the application platform before applying.

  • Certified copy of the ID document.
  • Certified copy of Matric latest results (if currently in Matric) or Matric certificate (if completed).
  • Most recent academic record (on institution’s letterhead).
  • Proof of university registration or acceptance (on institution’s letterhead).

  • Parents or guardians’ proof of household income.

Closing Date

The closing date for the SBPM Bursary is 15 June. Applications submitted after this date will not be accepted.
