ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – MAIZE TRUST
The Maize Trust is a South African organization established in 1998 with the purpose of promoting and advancing the maize industry in the country. It was formed after the closure of the Maize Board and is committed to ensuring the industry’s continuous improvement and international competitiveness.
The Trust provides financial support to organizations and institutions involved in production and market-related research programs in the maize industry. It also funds initiatives for market information dissemination and increasing market access, all aimed at benefiting the maize industry in South Africa. As part of their efforts, the Maize Trust offers the Maize Trust Bursary Scheme to support students pursuing studies in the maize industry.
ABOUT THE MAIZE TRUST BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The Maize Trust is inviting applications from students for their bursary programme for the academic year. The bursaries are available for postgraduate studies (Masters and Doctoral) in various fields related to the maize industry.

- Biometry
- Conservation Agriculture
- Data Science

- Food Sciences (relevant to the crop industry)

MORE ABOUT THE MAIZE TRUST BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & PAYMENT
The value of the bursary depends on the level of study. MSc/Masters by Dissertation students can receive funding up to R99,750 per annum for a maximum of 2 years. PhD/Doctoral Research students can receive funding up to R131,250 per annum for a maximum of 3 years.
Bursary funds are disbursed based on approved progress reports from the bursary recipients and their supervisors. The first installment of the bursary will be paid in January .
MORE ABOUT THE MAIZE TRUST BURSARY PROGRAMME – SERVICE CONTRACT & SELECTION
Upon graduation, bursary recipients are required to work within the South African maize industry for a period equal to the duration of the bursary received.
Shortlisted candidates will undergo telephonic interviews, and successful applicants will be notified within 8 weeks of the application closing date. Applicants who do not receive any feedback within this timeframe should consider their application unsuccessful.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAIZE TRUST BURSARY
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- South African citizenship
- Completion of Matric
- Full-time enrollment or intention to enroll in a relevant Masters or Doctoral qualification related to the South African maize industry
- Study at a tertiary institution recognized by the Maize Trust
- Not receiving any other funding or bursary awards (unless agreed to by the Trust)
- Intention to conduct a dissertation/thesis on an approved topic by the Maize Trust
- Willingness to work in the South African maize industry after completing studies
- Agreement to the Maize Trust Bursary conditions, policies, and procedures
- Acceptance of the terms in the Legal Undertaking section of the application form

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documents along with your online application (compulsory for consideration):
- Certified copy of ID document or Passport (not older than 3 months)
- Color ID photo
- Curriculum Vitae
- Proof of tertiary registration and fee statement on institution’s letterhead (submit after registration if not available during application)
- Full tertiary academic record, including latest results, on institution’s letterhead
- Details of proposed research, including working research title, description, and gantt chart
- Motivational letter supporting the application, including academic abilities, financial need, and future career goals
CLOSING DATE FOR THE MAIZE TRUST BURSARY
The closing date for applications is 30 September. It is advised to submit your application before the deadline to ensure consideration.
