ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – MEAT INDUSTRY TRUST (MIT)

Established in 1996, the Meat Industry Trust (MIT) is a discretionary Trust that focuses on funding various initiatives related to the South African Red Meat Industry. The MIT Bursary is administered by the Bursary Working Committee (BWC), which comprises individuals representing the research fraternity and industry interests with knowledge of tertiary institutions.

ABOUT THE MEAT INDUSTRY TRUST (MIT) BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The Meat Industry Trust (MIT) is offering bursaries for the academic year. The bursary covers postgraduate studies (Master’s or Doctorate degree) in research fields related to cattle, goats, pigs, and sheep. The bursary is open to various fields, including:

  • Consumer/Economics/Marketing
  • Environment/Climate
  • Genetics/Genomics/Breeding
  • Health/Disease control/Toxicology/Bio-security/Welfare
  • Hygiene/Product safety and quality
  • Meat Science
  • Nutrition
  • Physiology/Growth/Reproduction
  • Production systems/Efficiency/Management
  • Rangeland/Pasture/Water
  • Transition agriculture in livestock production
  • Waste management
  • and other related fields.

MORE ABOUT THE MEAT INDUSTRY TRUST BURSARY PROGRAMME

The MIT bursary aims to enhance the South African red meat industry through scientific research in areas such as improvement, production, manufacturing, processing, storing, or marketing of red meat or red meat products. It also supports livestock welfare and the development of human capital.

Selection for the bursary is based on two main criteria:

  1. Academic record and scientific quality of the project proposal
  2. Potential contribution of the project and acquired expertise to the South African red meat industry.

MORE ABOUT THE MEAT INDUSTRY TRUST BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE, PAYMENT & RENEWABILITY

The bursary is valued at R60,000 per annum, paid in two installments to the recipient’s institution. Master’s degree students receive funding of up to R120,000 over two consecutive years, while Doctorate degree students receive funding of up to R180,000 over three consecutive years. The first installment is paid after proof of acceptance and registration at the tertiary institution, while the second installment is paid after receiving a progress report from the student’s supervisor confirming satisfactory progress. The bursary is renewable each year based on academic performance and re-registration.

Bursary recipients are required to submit annual reports during their studies, as well as a final report upon completion.

Selection of candidates will be conducted by the BWC, and successful applicants will be notified accordingly.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MEAT INDUSTRY TRUST (MIT) BURSARY

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements before applying:

  • South African citizenship
  • Meet the criteria to register for a Master’s or Doctorate degree
  • Intend to study full-time towards a Master’s or Doctorate degree related to the listed fields in
  • For Master’s degree applicants: Completion of four academic years for a BSc Hons or a BSc (Agric) registered with the SA Qualifications Authority (SAQA) or an equivalent qualification or foreign qualification approved by SAQA, SACNASP, or SAVC
  • For Doctorate degree applicants: Completion of a Master’s degree registered with SAQA or an equivalent qualification or foreign qualification approved by SACNASP or SAVC
  • Study at a recognized and accredited South African tertiary institution
  • Not employed
  • Agree to all terms and conditions on the application form
  • Applicants with other bursaries must declare the details of applied and awarded bursaries, including any conflicting conditions.

Download and complete the Meat Industry Trust (MIT) Bursary Application Form available on the Za Bursaries website. Specify “https://uni24.co.za/” as the source of information on the application form.

Submit clear copies of the following compulsory supporting documents along with your completed application form:

  • Certified copy of ID document or Passport
  • Certified copies of all completed tertiary qualifications
  • Full academic record for each qualification (on university letterhead)

Label each document in the format “your full name; document name” and ensure they are in PDF format.

The closing date for applications is 5 November. It is important to submit your application before the deadline to ensure it is considered.
