About the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE):
The Department of Mineral Resources and the Department of Energy were two separate entities in the South African government until they were merged into one department in 2019. The DMRE is focused on improving the socio-economic growth of the nation by developing the mineral resources and energy sector. Their vision is to make South Africa a leader in transformation by facilitating economic growth and sustainable development in the mining and energy sectors. The DMRE has six programs aimed at promoting socio-economic growth, social equity, and environmental sustainability in these sectors.
DMRE Bursary Program 2024-2025:
The DMRE offers bursaries to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are pursuing careers related to energy resources and minerals. Both current and future undergraduate students can apply for this bursary program, provided their field of study falls under the following categories:
- Bachelor of Science (Physics and Chemistry)
- Chemical Engineering (Mineral Processing)
- Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current)
- Electro-Mechanical Engineering
- Environmental Health and Management
- Geology
- Industrial Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Metallurgical Engineering (Extractive)
- Mining Engineering
- Mining Survey
- Nuclear Engineering
- Rock Engineering
Shortlisted candidates for the bursary will be notified by January 31. The right to award the bursary rests with the DMRE, and they may refuse the bursary to unsuitable candidates.
Eligibility Criteria for the DMRE Bursary Program:
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria to qualify for the DMRE Bursary Program:
- Must be a citizen of South Africa
- Current Matric students and those who have completed Matric can apply
- Intention to pursue a full-time qualification in one of the fields mentioned by the DMRE
- Undergraduate studies only
- Willing to pursue the course at a South African University or University of Technology
- Demonstrates a weak financial background
- Minimum level 6 or HG “B” symbol for Science in Matric
- Minimum level 6 or HG “B” symbol for Mathematics in Matric
- Belongs to a disadvantaged social background or rural area
- Not employed
- Preference given to first-year students
- Priority given to female students
- Disabled students are encouraged to apply
How to Apply for the DMRE Bursary:
To apply for the DMRE Bursary, students must complete the DMRE Bursary Application Form (PDF).
Ensure that the form is filled accurately using block letters and mark relevant fields with “X.”
Use only the provided application form, as old or outdated forms will be rejected.
Required Documents:
Applicants must submit copies of the following documents along with the application form:
- Certified ID proof
- Matric certificate/latest matric results
- Recent academic record
- Proof of registration/acceptance at a University
- ID documents of parents/guardians
- Death certificate of deceased parents/guardians
- Motivational letter supporting your application
- If one or both parents’ whereabouts are unknown, submit an affidavit
- Proof of income (parents/guardians)
- Residence proof, such as a municipal utility bill (not older than 3 months), a copy of the sworn affidavit, or a stamped letter from tribal authorities
